Chapter 7
JT
Something had shifted. And I wasnât talking about the owls sneaking around in the trees above us. No, something had happened to Estes. Had it been my mother and Henry?
âAre you okay?â I finally had to ask her.
âWhat?â Looking up at me with those beautiful eyes, her expression shifted when she refocused and let her thoughts change. âOh, um. Yeah. Iâm good.â
âHenry is an ass,â I said quickly. âAnd my mom isnât much better.â
âNo,â she smiled. âI mean yes, I sensed that. But that wasnât what I was thinking about.â
âWould you want to talk about it?â Weâd already reached the other side of the pond and I worried Iâd run out of excuses to keep her by my side if she didnât start talking.
âIs it hard?â
âExcuse me?â
âKeeping secrets all the time. Is it hard not to be able to talk to people about what you are?â
I knew there was a deeper meaning to what Estes was asking me, but I started with the obvious. âSure. Itâs not fun lying to people outside of our society. I mean, Iâm used to it now, but I donât enjoy it.â
Estes stopped and turned to look out over the water. When a squirrel skittered up a tree nearby, she jumped and then quickly tried to cove r it by picking up a pebble. Tossing it in her hand for several moments, she started to drift into a different place again.
âWhy do you ask?â
Instead of answering, she said, âDo you think your life would be different if you didnât have to hide who you are?â
I shrugged. âYeah, maybe.â Stepping a little closer, I reached out and touched her shoulder. She stopped playing with the pebble when I did. âEstes, whatâs going on? Did my mother say something to you?â
She smiled, but it wasnât a real one that lit up her face. Turning, she tossed the pebble into the pond and watched the ripples dance across the surface until they disappeared for good. âI think Iâm different.â
Yes, you certainly are.
âI heard that,â she said to me as she dropped her eyes.
âWhat?â
âYour thoughts. I can hear your thoughts.â
Oh shit.
Estes giggled.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â I asked.
She lowered herself gracefully to the ground and I followed. âIt wasnât something I could do until Lachlan hit me last night. And I thought maybeâ¦maybe I was just imagining or projecting peopleâs feelings into words. But then I metââ Her eyes widened and she clamped her lips together.
âMet who?â
âI donât know if I can tell you.â Her eyes darted to the trees as though she was searching for something.
I hesitated, not knowing really what to say or do next. It felt like she wanted to talk to me, but we didnât know each other very well. At the same time, she already knew more about me than most of the humans in this town.
âI donât think Iâm human,â she said in response to my inner commentary.
âOf course you are,â I said. âTrust me, I would know.â
âHave you ever met an Aes Sith before?â
âA what-shee?â
Estes smiled.
